At Noon In Democrats Square
Democrats Square_small_copy
2017, Vilijampole, Kaunas
Site-specific performative intervention in public space
Duration 7 min. Daily at noon for 10 weeks
Every day at noon a singer comes unannounced and sings two Yiddish songs to the emptiness of Democrats Square.
The suburb of Vilijampole (Slobodka) was the location where all the Kaunas Jews were forced to move in July 1941, when the Kaunas Ghetto was established. It was transformed into a concentration camp in 1943 and liquidated in 1944. Here, in the place known during the ghetto period as Democrats Square, on 28th October 1941, a mass selection of the Ghetto inhabitants, known as the Big Action, took place, which resulted in the killing of 9,200 men, women and children in Fort IX. “Snow was falling, mixed with rain.” Up until 2019 there was no memorial or sign there to mark this terrible event and its victims.
