“Number, name” – these words often appear on forms as a guide to where the information needs to be entered, but it is not yet there. On this building that information is no longer there, it has been lost, erased – there is no longer a (house) number or a (street) name. The emptiness that has replaced them – the loss of a piece of history of the city, or perhaps of all of us – is here now marked by the signs of something completely different: an unreadable text, a calligraphy, etched into the space of the city. This entire building (VAA student dormitory) was carved into the site just a few decades ago, replacing ruined houses; it is said to have been built in haste, without proper research, and there is a myth that some martyrs were once buried here. We will never know, but we can still see the illegible inscription about them in the city's palimpsest.
