Lasnamae, Tallinn, Estonia
Site-specific installation; re-used black carpet
A piece of black carpet, normally used indoors for exhibitions and corporate events (and then often discarded after just a single use), here lies outside on a pedestrian bridge connecting two parts of Lasnamae – a working-class residential neighbourhood of Tallinn, built during the Soviet era. The carpet is in the form of a shadow of a high-rise apartment block. But this shadow never moves. Perhaps the invisible source of light that makes the fake shadow is the infamous dawn of a new tomorrow that never broke – the Soviet promise of the better future that never came? The passers-by interact with the materiality of this “shadow” by either stepping on it and possibly experiencing certain unease at the unexpected surface, or by consciously avoiding and walking around this unexplained object. At least they have that choice.
